Moonstruck: Memoirs of My Life in a Cult
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (October, 1979)
Author: Allen Tate. Wood
Average review score:

MoonStruck: a descent into religious fascism
The author, Allen Tate Wood , November 4, 2000 MoonStruck exposes the global political ambitions of Sun Myung Moon. Allen, as political leader of the Moonies in North America in 1970, went on a V.I.P. tour of Asia including Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Cambodia. In Japan he met and worked with Japanese leaders of the Unification Church and with many of the key figures in the World Anti Communist League from Europe, the U.S., Asia and Latin America . In Korea he had a series of private audiences with Mr. Moon during which he was instructed on "Moon's plan of attack in America". In Vietnam he met with President Thieu. In Cambodia he met with General Lon Nol, the leader of Cambodia. On returning to America Allen was invited to join the Nixon White House staff as a "youth consultant". MoonStruck provides a cogent exposition of Moon's global political strategy as well as a moving first hand account of an idealistic young man who followed Moon into the abyss of religious facism.

The author, e-mail altwood@lemoorenet.com, web page http://www.allentwood.com , November 4, 2000 A few remarks about MoonStruck MoonStruck is an autobiographical tour de force: a recapitulation of my life before during and after my four and one half years in the Moonies. My friend Henry Marshall described it as " a modern day pilgrim's progress with an extended stay among the Moonies,Wood's self-examination charts a way through a dark night of the soul in which many are still stranded."

Mother Teresa: A Life in Pictures
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (paper) (October, 1992)
Authors: Roger Royle and Gary Woods
Average review score:

Seeing is Believing
Mother Teresa never wanted her life to be written about or paid attention to. Her intent when interviewed, was that the work was featured first and foremost. Writing of the work, however, regardless of the fluidity of the words, the impact of the passage or the transparency of the truth, nothing can ever truly project the work of Mother and the Missionaries of Charity. This picture volume however, comes one step closer. Featuring pictures taken of Mother and the sisters at their work among the poor in Calcutta, it is truly an eye-opening experience. The starkness of the black and white photographs bring out and bring across how lost and desolate the poor would be if not for the unchartered and unparalled love and care given to them. Every image, be it of Mother cradling a child with her intense look and stong hands or be it of Mother with Princess Diana or other celebrities, allows us a little glimpse into the world that has been made better by Mother. As she herself put it "What you can do, I cannot do and what I can do, you cannot do. But let every action of ours be something beautful for God". This is the very essence of the photographs depicted here and brings us this much closer to understanding the work of Mother and the Missionaries of Charity. A volume to be treasured. Indeed, it is something beautiful for God.

Mrs. Restino's Country Kitchen: The Complete Wood Stove Cookbook
Published in Paperback by Putnam Pub Group (Paper) (September, 1976)
Author: Susan. Restino
Average review score:

Like an Old Friend
I have had a copy of "Mrs. Restino's Country Kitchen" since it was published in 1976. Its cover is now tattered and creased, quite a few of the pages are stuck together with unidentifiable food particles, and not long ago I finally had to repair the collapsing spine with tape -- that's how much I've used this book in the last 24 years. Ironically, I was never a back-to-nature person, a vegetarian, or a hippie -- I simply appreciated this book for its intelligent, clear-eyed approach to food and cooking. Over the years I grew to depend on it whenever I needed an idea for preparing an unfamiliar vegetable, or if I happened to have odds and ends lying around and didn't quite know what to do with them. Recently I've been using it more than ever, since my significant other is a botanist and a fine gardener, and I've discovered a little of the excitement of growing fresh vegetables, albeit in a tiny urban garden. In short, I would recommend this book to anybody, rural or urban, carnivore or vegetarian, hippie or yuppie -- Restino's writing style is straightforward, unsentimental, charming, full of character, and clearly comprehensible. You don't have to cook on a wood stove to be infected by her honesty, her clarity, or her very understandable desire to know for a certainty where one's food comes from. As a footnote -- this book, and the distinct picture it provides of its author, affected me personally, to the point where I have sometimes found myself wondering what might have happened to Susan Restino -- did she survive the turbulent '70s, did she stay in the country, how did her own life turn out. I'm glad to see she is still active, and that this wonderful book seems to be forthcoming in a new edition. It richly deserves a multi-generational following.

Looking for Something Different?
Looking for something different to make on your scroll saw? Then this is your book. Take a flat piece of 3/4" hardwood, using a bevel cut and these patterns, you create a fold out basket. Quite unique designs.

This book contains 8 pages of instuctions. The basic techique for creating a basket is the same for all basket designs, just different bevel angles and shapes. Also included are some helpful hints on making mirrors, picture frames, clocks and weather stations, all with the same design. There is also a section on how to customize the basket project with dates/names for anniversaries or birthdays.

The 8 pages of color photos shows examples of different project techniques and is a great aid in what a final project looks like. A great book for unique designs and projects.

Music Theory for Dummies!
Music Theory and Arranging Techniques for Folk Harps by Sylvia Woods.

If you ever had to take a class in music theory in school maybe you are more fortunate than I in that and you can remember and apply some of what you learned. For the rest of you I highly recommend buying this book of Sylvia's titled; Music Theory and Arranging Techniques for Folk Harps. Written before the "..... for Dummies" series became so popular, this book takes you easily and with lots of examples and illustrations from major chords to transposing... and everywhere in between! In the introduction Sylvia urges the reader to " Have fun with this book. Just go at your own pace, and take it step by step." Presenting concepts and theory step-by-step is another thing Sylvia does best!!!
